A Typical Day of Food on Power 90X and an Update

That's Me Post Flu and Food Binge (Okay, It's An Exaggeration)

Not much going on around here. I’m a little sleep deprived – a common condition of mothers of eight years old boys and 7 month old puppies. So I’m taking today off for a long winter’s nap. Hey, it’s not Spring time for another 3 days.

I’m still reading Joel Marion’s ‘Cheat To Lose Diet’ and liking what I see for the most part. I plan to try it in conjunction with a mix of workouts (click a link to view each product) including the classic workouts from Power 90, and cutting edge workouts from Bosu 3D, Power 90X, Power 90X Plus, and my new untried set of Tony Horton’s 10 Minute Trainer Workouts, starting, hmm, I hope tomorrow…

As for my present stats, I seem to have gained six pounds and about 5 percent body fat, up to 120 pounds from 114 pounds and 23 percent body fat from 18 percent body fat. (Note that water retention messes with bio-impedance fat measurements so this might change rapidly). Proving even a temporary 2 ½ week diet of classic American food like bacon, potatoes, butter, bread, and pasta – Dreamfield’s no less, I've always suspected their "low net carb" claims were technically bull – can make you gain weight. My measurements changed from bust DOWN by 1 inch,, waist UP ½ inch, my widest belly measurement below the waist UP 2.5 inches (!hope that’s water weight!), my hips UP ¾ inch, and my right thigh UP 2 ½ and left thigh DOWN 1 ½ (talk about weird changes).

I suspect the real issue with the measurements is way too much sodium (I rarely ever eat bacon and saltines but ate lots of both during and after the flu). And some of the weight gain is also no workouts since February 20th. I haven't been burning nearly as many calories as usual and sleeping a lot. Nap city. baby. Well, it’s over and I’m back on the P90X slash New Workouts workout wagon tomorrow. I’ll keep y’all updated on the results.

Below is my usual food plan on P90X. I will be tweaking it to try for maximum water loss and incorporating what I learn reading 'The Cheat To Lose Diet'. No sodium for me and lots of water.

My Typical Food Intake – Six Days a Week

Workout Day

6:30 am – coffee

7:30 am – meal one:
4 egg whites and 1 whole egg with 1 ounce shredded high flavor cheese and vegetables (mushrooms, peppers, onions, spices) drizzled with 1 teaspoon flax oil.

Other options:

1 cup nonfat cottage cheese with 1 teaspoon flax oil (I prefer my fat come from Omegas instead of animal fats when possible) and 1 cup blackberries.

3 ounces sirloin or round steak, 1 slice whole wheat bread, 1 table Smart Balance margarine (has a perfect omega 3 to 6 ratio).

3 ounces chicken, 1 low carb tortilla, 1 ounce shredded cheese, 2 tablespoons salsa, 2 tablespoons guacamole.

10:30 am – meal two
Protein shake of 25 grams protein with 1 cup fruit.

Options:

1 cup nonfat cottage cheese with flax oil, whole wheat roll with Smart Balance margarine.

3 ounces lime and chile chicken, ½ cup mixed bean salad.

4 ounces shrimp, cocktail sauce, mixed vegetables with flax oil.

12:30 pm – workout

2:30 pm – meal three:
protein shake with fruit.

5:30 pm – meal four: 1 ounce Stilton cheese, 1 ounce nuts, 1 glass of wine.

Options:

1 cup nonfat cottage cheese sprinkled with 2 tablespoons parmesan, 1 ounce pine nuts, and 1 ounce black olives.

1 cup cottage cheese sprinkled with 1 ounce blue cheese, and 1 ounce walnuts.

4 ounce shrimp, 1 cup mixed salad greens, 1 tablespoon flax oil, 1 tablespoon lime juice.

8:00 pm – meal five:

3 ounce steak, ½ cup grilled or sautéed mushroom and onions, whole wheat roll with Smart Balance margarine. Glass or two or wine (oh, the.

Options:

2 ounce steak, 3 ounces shrimp, mixed salad greens, flax oil.

½ cup Dreamfield’s spaghetti, ½ cup homemade marinara, 2 ounces extra lean ground beef, 2 tablespoons parmesan. Note: I tend to limit my intake of Dreamfield’s products as I’m suspicious of their actual net carbs and 190 calories a serving of FLUFF is rather high).

3 ounces barbecue chicken (1/4 cup homemade low carb bbq sauce), 1 cup green beans with almonds and Smart Balance margarine.

On a busy night a Lean Cuisine or Smart Ones frozen dinner with vegetables.

One weight lifting days – protein shake between 1am – 3 am to maintain anabolism overnight to support muscle growth.

My Typical Cheat Day – One Day a Week (Usually Saturday or another day with a heavy workout).

Option one: breakfast out – two whole eggs scrambled, sourdough toast with butter, chicken fried steak, hash browns. Then 3 regular meals like those above.

Option two: breakfast at home as usual, lunch out at Round Table Pizza – pizza and salad buffet and a beer. Dinner at home as above with a bottle of wine.

Option three: three meals at home as usual with homemade pizza or lasagna or tempura battered fish, shrimp, fries and beer.

Option four: 4 regular meals as above and a dinner of champagne, brie, caviar and chocolate (thinks Valentine’s Day, Birthday, or Anniversary.

I’m aware many bodybuilding nutritionists – like Chris Aceto - view alcohol calories negatively. Some claim it even interferes with anabolism. Then why are my muscles bigger AND harder than just months ago. I view moderate alcohol intake as not only a relaxing pleasure but another way to prime the pump – glucose load depleted muscles after weight lifting and preload for the next day’s workout.

Alcohol typically acts like a carbohydrate although it has 7 calories per gram instead of 4 calories per gram like carbohydrates. Usually alcohol is turned into body fat when not used as fuel. An example is if you need 2000 calories to maintain your weight and a beer or glass of wine puts you over that threshold it will turn to fat. If the alcohol calories are within your caloric needs and replace other high energy foods like potatoes or pasta you won't gain weight.

Not to mention a drink or two helps with DOMS and my other pain issues including osteo-arthritis, intermittent tendonistis, and Cerebral Palsy-related pain – if interested see “Pain, spasms and contraction Pain is a part of daily life for most people with cerebral palsy. Pain will cause spasms; spasms will cause pain.”

I don’t tolerate over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, Aleve very well. They all irritate my gastro-intestinal tract although my colitis is well controlled through diet..

Principles used are based on bodybuilding nutrition principles including Joel Marion’s Cheat to Lose Diet.

“Joel Marion discovered a weird thing while trying to get ripped: the more often he cheated (within reason), the more he leaned up. He didn't know it at the time but he was manipulating leptin, a primary fat-burning hormone.” Read more.

Don’t attempt this type of food plan unless you are seriously training including bodybuilding or weight training along with aerobic conditioning. This is NOT a weight loss diet although shedding body fat is likely. This diet is intended for anabolic muscle growth as a result of intense weight training workouts. Men and larger women will need more calories and protein than my meal plans. Remember, I am a HOBBIT at 5 foot tall and 112 -16 pounds.

Last Lost Weekend Before Going Back On Program

When I got sick with the flu and then sinus infection I totally ignored my diet and abandoned my exercise program. I went through having no appetite at all to craving bacon and potatoes to getting sick of stodgy foods all together. All my flu and sinus symptoms are gone now and I'm getting plenty of sleep. My new Tony Horton 10 Minute Trainer Workouts have arrived and Monday I'm back on program. I'll be mixing them in with my Power 90X and Power 90X Plus workouts.

I'm not reining in my diet yet, partly because I'm reading 'The Cheat To Lose Diet' by Body For Life Grand Champion Joel Marion. (I competed in the 2000 Body For Life Competition six months after Bruno was born). And I've had previous experiences of metabolism boosts from eating more calories for brief periods of time. I nearly always have better results after a break from program.

This weekend I'm making my healthy homemade beef and five vegetable stew so the whole weekend isn't 'lost'. I'll enjoy wine and pizza tonight with Jerry then enjoy my weekend off by 'cleaning out the kitchen' including some leftover chocolate shots. "Yummo!" as Rachael Ray says.

Monday will start me down the training path that leads to swim suit season. I have lots of clean foods for next week - skinless chicken, fish, shrimp, lean beef, turkey, vegetables, fruits, and unrefined whole grains. Our backyard swimming pool is set to open on May 25th. I'd like to buy a smaller size suit this year. The last time I tried on the orange suit in the photo on my sidebar it was a bit loose. I'll post stats and reviews of the first of the 10 Minute Trainer videos early next week.

An aside, I've been having a lot of fun (mixed with frustration) with Photoshop this week working on eBook cover design and manipulating text, photos, and strange new Photoshop techniques. I thought I was a Photoshop whiz because I've been using Photoshop Elements for about 3 years and a full version Photoshop CS Jerry bought me for maybe 18 months to work on photos and some designs. Well let me tell you, I am an amateur who had barely scratched the surface of what Photoshop is capable of accomplishing. I have a three inch thick Photoshop manual but it's not nearly as full of tricks as some of the tutorials you can find online with a Google search. Maybe I'll post some of my experiments later.

Until then, I wish you all a great weekend.

Update & Cool Blog Reads

As expected I wasn’t able to get another Power 90X Plus workout in over the four day weekend with Bruno home all four days and his Daddy home on the weekend with me. I did get in about 90 minutes of circuit training in yesterday on the iGallop, uSurf, Leg Magic, Stepper, and GoFit Disc (squats, lunges, knee lifts) and some karate. Bruno joined in and we traded stations as well as facing off at karate.

Today I’ll get in a Power 90X Plus and write a review soon. Also yesterday I bought HSN’s Today’s Special – Tony Little’s new Rock N Roll Stepper. At $58 and free shipping it was almost half off the infomercial price. What's really cool, my husband put $3 in a video poker machine yesterday and won $60 so it's like the stepper was free. Once it comes and we try it I’ll write a review.

What I’ve Been Reading Online – Here’s Some Outstanding Blog Entries. And believe me, they’re usually few and far between. These are blog entries almost everyone can learn from, identify with, or appreciate.

Jack Sprat’s “Complain or Compline”

This week we did something called “Compline” which is a rite from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer that is used to end the day. It can be done simply – I think we covered it in 10 minutes or less.

I’ve been thinking about it the past two days because compline has one of my all-time favorite prayers:

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or
weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who
sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless
the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the
joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

It pretty much covers every aspect of the human condition! And lately I’ve been a worker, watcher, and weeper, dealing with the weary, the sick, and the afflicted. (Well, I’m sorry, but “afflicted” is just how some people act at the scale!!). Read more.

Fat Doctor’s Scripts “Just One. Just One. Just one.”

“I realize that when partner who hates me was out of the office on a break, I felt great. Partner came back, said one snippy thing to me and my anxiety shot through the roof.

First thing I did this morning post discussion with partner was stare at the vending machine for several minutes toying with the idea of a candy bar.

Just one. Just one. Just one.

Husband says I am following my father’s script.

My father, a functional alcoholic who was outwardly quite successful, blamed everything in the world for why he drank. His perceived failures, his demanding job, his illness, and more than sometimes the stress we children caused him.” Read more.

Flabuless’ “The day God got through to me!”

“Sitting here on the floor in my lounge room typing this I don’t really know what I am supposed to type, I just know I need to type. I feel numb really, maybe its the pills maybe its just the cold hard realization of who I have become…the worst sinner in the world really….yea I know thats the Apostle Paul’s line but sitting here I feel the same.

But I really am the worst sinner in the world, I have betrayed my best friend, committed adultery and reveled in it I must add. I have lied, cheated, I have neglected my children so that I can partake in a ‘Party Life’. But most importantly and to sum everything up I have turned my back on God and all his goodness.

I look at myself in the mirror and I see an awful horrible human being but then I read psalms where he says YOU are fearfully and wonderfully made and It just doesn’t match up…look at me, look at what I have done! I am U.G.L.Y. And yet God still hasn’t given up on me despite my numerous attempts to force him to wash his hands of me still he has me so tightly in his grasp, still he keeps, cherishes, protects me, he hedges me behind and before and lays His hand upon my shoulder.

Why????? Why me???? the social worker today told me because HE has a plan for my life!” Read more.

Power 90X Plus Kenpo Cardio Plus Review

There’s one word for this workout – intense! Oh, wait, here’s more words to describe Kenpo Cardio Plus – fast paced, demanding, driven, unforgiving. This workout is extreme to the max. The original Power 90X Kenpo Karate X has always been a favorite of mine and Bruno. This workout builds on the original and ramps it up. I was sweating before the warm up was over and totally soaked by the end.

At 45 minutes in length, it includes a warm up of running in place, twist jumps, jumping jacks, jump rope, yoga moves, standard stretches, ballistic stretches.

The body of the workout is Kenpo karate moves – mostly combinations that maximize impact. Here they are in order: Jab / Cross / Shuffle, Hook / Uppercut / Shuffle, Double Hammer / Lunge / Sword, Lower Block / Hammer / Front Kick, Low Block / Hammer / Front Kick, Side Speed Kicks, Cardio Break – Running In Place, Jump Rope, Jumping Jacks, Twisters, Jab / Cross / Shuffle, Hook / Uppercut / Shuffle, Jab / Step / Cross, Double Hammer / Lunge / Sword, Low Block / Hammer, Front Kick, Side Speed Kicks, Cardio Break – Same As Above, Jab / Uppercut / Back Kick, Claw / Hammer / Lunge, Back Fist / Hammer / Front Kick / Knee Kick, Elbow / Sword / Back Kick, Cardio Break, Jab / Uppercut / Back Kick, Claw / Hammer / Lunge, Claw / Hammer / Front Kick, Back Fist / Hammer / Front Kick / Knee Kick, Elbow / Sword / Back Kick, Cardio Break, The Gladiator, Spinning Swords, Spinning Sword / Back Hammer, Double Sword / Knee Kick / Back Kick, High Block / Knee Kick Burn Out, Cardio Break, The Gladiator, Spinning Swords, Spinning Sword, Back Hammer, Double Sword / Knee Kick / Back Kick, High Block / Knee Kick Burn Out, COOL DOWN.

The cool down includes traditional Power 90X moves like yoga moves, standard stretches, and ballistic stretches.

I modified for balance issues like this: I used an eight by three foot floor space framed in by my couch, my large padded office chair, and my iGallop. This allowed me to go all out without balance being an issue. The few times I started to lose balance something large and padded was nearby to support me until I got my balance back.

I highly recommend Kenpo Cardio Plus for anyone who wants to burn a lot of calories in a reasonably short time (45 minutes). Bring your best game, you'll need endurance and strength to get through this fat burner.

This is one I’d like to do a video of soon. If you’re curious about the original Power 90X Kenpo Karate X Bruno and I did five demo videos and they’re linked in my sidebar under “Our Videos”.

Power 90X Plus Total Body Plus Review & Nutrition on Power 90X

Tony Horton, Creator of Power 90, Power 90X, and Power 90X Plus

Buy Power 90X
- Buy Power 90X Plus

Yowsa! I Love This Workout! Owww! Although only 45 minutes this workout hits every major muscle and a few others I didn’t know I had. I recommend Power 90X and Power 90X Plus to anyone who's fit and ready to take it to the next level. This was my first time doing Power 90X Plus Total Body so I watched each exercise before attempting them. Almost all of the exercises were new to me and I’d never done them before although some moves – squats, lunges, push ups, pull ups, etc. – were familiar from Power 90X. If you already own Power 90X there's no repeats here, folks. You truly get what you pay for with Power 90X Plus - four rocking Extreme workouts.

Here’s the exercises in the order they’re performed. If you don’t know how an exercise is performed click on this link for video demos, or go here and look them up, or do an internet search.

What you’ll need: SelectTech Weights, Free Weights or Resistance Bands, pull up bar, towel, water.

Warm Up - including running in place, ballistic stretches, yoga moves, standard push ups, squat / rock / reach, walking lunges, Dive Bomb push ups, Twisting Pivot, Cyclone, Jumping Jacks, about 8 minutes.

Main workout – O Crunch Push Ups, Pull Up Crunches, Dead Lift / Curl / Press Combo, Step Kickback Chairs, Sumo Chairs, Chuck Up X, Cling On Run, Lunge Press with Bella Twist, Balance Curl, Running Man, Hindu / Pike Push Ups, Lunge / Squat / Lunge Combo, Mr. Moon, Kid Play, 3 & 3 (squats / push ups / pull ups), Half Dervish, Weighted Warrior, 1 & 1 (push ups and pull ups for 2 minutes), Lara Lunge Crunch, Spiderman Jumps, Plyo Push Ups, about 33 minutes.

Cool Down – ballistic bounce, ballistic stretches, standard stretches, about 4 minutes.

I only had to slightly modify three exercises due to my balance issues related to Cerebral Palsy. Even after a four week layoff from formal resistance training it’s obvious I’m getting stronger. Although the workout was challenging and I was sweating before we were through the warm up, it was fun and I am thrilled to be back on program.

And that endorphin rush afterwards is really nice.

Start Stats For P90X Plus

Height 5 foot and ½ inch (up a ½ inch since last measured and likely due to yoga, stretching and Pilates routines that lengthen spine and soft tissues).

Weight 114 pounds

Body Fat Percentage 20.4 percent

Bust 34.5 inches

Waist 29.5 inches

Hips 36 ¾ inches

Thighs (measured high up) R 20 L 21

As for nutrition on Power 90X and Power 90X Plus, the nutrition guidebook states this is NOT a weight loss diet – although the workouts and nutritional support equal loss of body fat and gain of muscle mass. No one eats less than 1800 calories a day on this program and men eat as high as 3000 calories a day depending on what phase their on, their goals, and their size. These workouts are demanding and you must fuel your body properly for athletic performance. Low calorie, low carb, or inadequate protein will sabotage your performance and results. The macro-nutrient ratios are between 60 percent carb, 30 percent protein, 10 percent fat and 40 percent carbs, 40 percent protein, 20 percent fat depending on what phase you’re on.

This is an Extreme fitness program intended to get already fit people to the next level. It is not recommended for beginners, and many at an intermediate fitness level will struggle. If you aqre not fit, were once fit and are now out of shape, or overweight, and looking for a weight loss and exercise program this ain’t it. This isn’t a start up program by any means. I recommend Six Week Body Makeover, Slim In Six, and The Firm for beginner to intermediate fitness levels. All come with nutrition guides. If you're at intermediate fitness and not ready for extreme workouts try the original Power 90 or Body For Life.
I can recommend them because I've done them and they're sound programs.

My Last Meal

Take Your Fitness To The Next Level

Buy Power 90X - Buy Power 90X Plus

This is my last day off from Power 90X. Tomorrow I go back on program - or should I say back to the Power 90X Lifestyle. My last Power 90X workout was Tuesday December 4th 2007 - Chest & Back. I remained active in other ways like moving a s#!t load of stuff when we moved my husband's home office and playing with my horse. But no official resistance training or aerobics was done.

I have been enjoying holiday treats like truffles, Belgian chocolates, crackers and cheese, caramel drizzled popcorn, champagne, caviar on Brie and more, but in moderation. Meaning I never left the portion control brigade. Off plan yet calorie controlled between 1550 and 2200 calories. My weight this morning is 114.5 pounds (premenstrual-I always gain water weight) and my body fat percentage this morning is 21 percent and 24 pounds body fat - this jumps around day to day due to variables like water weight, hydration, phase of the moon, Jupiter trine Mars. So I use my body fat meter as a guideline not as hard data. As long as my percentage stays between 17 and 20 percent, hey, I can live with it.

So I survived my holidays and being AWOL from Power 90X with little change in weight or body fat percent. I suspect some muscle loss due to lack of weight training, being off of creatine and protein shakes. Past experience tells me I can rely on muscle memory, new stimulus (Power 90X Plus is coming to my house and it arrived in Sparks, NV last night and should be out for delivery tomorrow), a supplement stack, and good nutrition to pack muscle back on and more.

As for my last meal - the one I'll indulge in tonight before going to the gallows, um, I mean before going to the Tony Horton torture chamber - is fried seafood, fries and onion rings. Yummo! Shrimp and oysters dipped in tempura batter and deep fried. That, my friends and dear readers, is divine. Tomorrow it's back to high protein, controlled fat and controlled unrefined carbohydrates. And POWER 90X! Maybe I'll start at the beginning again and do Chest & Back. Or maybe my favorite Back & Legs. Followed by a coffee and mocha protein shake. Choices, choices.

Update & Wishing You A Happy New Year

Just a quick update. We're very busy in Bardelli (Barzarro) World. My husband moved his home office out of the room he shared with our son and onto one wall of our bedroom. All his stored stuff he didn't use much or at all got moved outside into storage sheds. Bruno is a happy little camper in his "new" unshared room. And I loll in bed watching tv while Jerry plays with his Linux and Windows computers.

On the weight and fitness front I'm down to 112 pounds. One hundred and twelve pounds! That's two pounds from goal! Woo Hoo! Although my scale weight is down my body fat crept up to 20.4 percent and 23 pounds. I don't know if the scale shift downward was water loss, muscle loss, fat loss or a combination. Frankly right now I could care less. My break ends on the 7th and by then my new Power 90X Plus will be here! I was invited to pre-order as I'm a Power 90Xer. Yeah!

And I haven't been doing conventional workouts - think Power 90X - but I've been active including horse wrangling. I'll tell that tale later. Talk about high excitement. I've been enjoying holiday fare including champagne, chocolates, chips, dips, crackers, cheese, and beef stick snacks. I have to conclude this three week break from Power 90X hasn't hurt me. I'm rested up and raring to go. Bring it!

Use It Or Lose It

I'm too busy using it to do more than a brief update here. Seems the minute Thanksgiving was over I was in the midst of Christmas preparations. Lots of shopping, decorating and list making going on. And I'm excitedly awaiting the December release of Power 90X Plus! I can't wait! Talk about a kid excited about Christmas.

If you're curious about my current nutrition and fitness check out "My Program This Month" on the sidebar. I update it daily. I'm visualizing my muscles growing even as I hang the lights and holly.

I should be updating again soon. We're planning on making a video this weekend.
Happy Holidays, Carol

Use It Or Lose It: Physical Activity In Middle Age

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2007) — Researchers from the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, UK, have concluded a study that proves a direct link between levels of physical activity in middle age and physical ability later in life -- regardless of body weight.

Dr. Iain Lang headed the research team from the Epidemiology and Public Health Group at the Peninsula Medical School. The team found that middle-aged people who maintained a reasonable level of physical activity were less likely to become unable to walk distances, climb stairs, maintain their sense of balance, stand from a seated position with their arms folded, or sustain their hand grip as they get older.

Research showed that, among men and women aged 50 to 69 years and across all weight ranges, the rate of decreased physical ability later in life was twice as high among those who were less physically active.

The research team studied 8,702 participants in the US Health and Retirement Study and 1,507 people taking part in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Each subject was followed for up to six years.

Findings showed that being overweight or obese was associated with an overall increased risk of physical impairment but that, regardless of weight, people who engaged in heavy housework or gardening, who played sport or who had a physically active job, were more likely to remain mobile later in life.
