Living in Nevada, choosing health in a land of temptation, part one

A lot of people who have never traveled to Reno or northern Nevada think it's just like Las Vegas, hot, crowded, all glitter, gambling, and glitz. It's true northern Nevada often has heat waves in July, but it also has snow storms in winter. Our view of the Sierra Nevada mountain range has snowy peaks from late September through early July. And northern Nevada sports some of the highest rated ski resorts in the world like Squaw Valley and Heavenly.

Our climate has distinct seasons while Las Vegas, 450 miles south of Reno, is much like Phoenix, Arizona – unbearably hot three seasons of the year and shirt sleeve warm in the winter. Reno, Lake Tahoe, and Carson City to a lesser degree, have their share of casinos, live shows and glittering neon. But northern Nevada offers a great deal more than Las Vegas in the way of outdoor sports and fitness activities all year round.

Rest Is A Critical Requirement to Build Muscle

If you want to build muscle, going to the gym and getting in your workouts is crucial. Intensity during your workouts is important as well. If you don't stress your muscles sufficiently, you won't see any growth or results from your efforts. Doing the right exercises for maximum growth is also a key component of a well constructed muscle growth routine.

Weight lifters also appreciate the importance of proper nutrition. Without the right number of calories coming in (i.e. a surplus), a lifter will never gain muscle mass worth counting. In addition, the calories have to be the right composition - plenty of protein with a healthy portion of carbs and fats. They also need plenty of vitamins, minerals, and water to supplement their training.

All of these components are well appreciated and debated by exercisers and weight lifters everywhere. But one of the keys to any good program to build muscle is often ignored: rest. It is during rest that muscles repair the damage caused by the exercise, and it is during rest that the muscles grow bigger and stronger.

Too many lifters focus on working as hard as possible and then they enter a state of overtraining. Overtraining occurs when individuals don't give their muscles enough time to recuperate between workouts. Being in this state can cause a massive plateau to your results, and even worse, it can even lead to injuries which can set you back for months.

The proper way to continue to build muscle throughout your program is to make rest a priority. This may seem like you're going soft, but you're not. Rest is as crucial, and perhaps more important, than proper exercise and nutrition.

When designing your workout plan, make sure to add in enough bouts of rest between workouts. There are many ways to do this. One way is to do full body workouts through the week, leaving a day of rest in between, such as a Monday, Wednesday, Friday (or Saturday) workout. This will leave plenty of time in between for proper recuperation. Others like to work out everyday, so they separate out each day to focus on a particular muscle group. For example, Monday could be chest, Tuesday is biceps, and so on. This allows each muscle group to have periods of rest and periods of workouts. However, weight lifters following this schedule should be careful that the "off" days for the muscles truly are off days. For instance, certain chest exercises require working the biceps, and vice versa.

Sunset Supper Poached Figs

Figs are a festive and fancy holiday food. Grocery stores sometimes carry fresh figs during the holiday season. If they're not available in your market, figs can be ordered online from fine food sellers like Amazon and iGourmet.

The fruit of the fig tree (botanical name Ficus carica,) is a staple food in its native home of southwest Asia and the Mediterranean region. Fig trees are also found in the warmer regions of the US including California. While dried figs have a distinctly different appearance from fresh figs, either can be used in this recipe.

The Secrets Of Bodybuilding Training For Young Athletes

For many years, high school and college athletic coaches frowned upon their athletes doing any sort of weight training. However, as television brought more money to professional sports, college and even high school athletic programs worked to increase the performance of their athletes in order to keep up. As a result, kids became stronger and faster in order to advance. Weight training, sports supplementation, and other bodybuilding fundamentals quickly became part of every sports program in the nation.
A stigma still exists, for many, about bodybuilding. Many athletic programs employ a core weight-training program - squats, presses, dead lifts, and bench press - but they neglect full body development. Some consider this practice dangerous, as core training leaves many stabilizer body part groups ignored, even endangered, as muscle imbalances lead to new strains as some parts grow. Let's count the ways that bodybuilding training gives you an edge in sports.
Mental edge In any competition, the stronger man will always possess more confidence than his adversary. You can call it animal instinct, the alpha male complex, or anything else. But when two men face one another, the stronger of the two possesses a carnal advantage in every situation. It might not always result in a win, but it does provide a mental edge.

Core strengths
Using compound exercise movements like bench press, presses, squats, and dead lifts are a great way to make the entire body grow. They also create added strength in those actions most used in sports - jumping, running and stopping, moving opponents, and maintaining position. They build the core, which is your base for all performance.
Isolating weaknesses
The core strength training mentioned above is great for growing overall body mass, and targeting the large muscle groups. However, as these body parts grow, the strain, which exists on the smaller groups to support them, grows as well. You are MORE likely to sustain an injury if your back, chest and shoulders grow, yet your lower back, neck, traps, and arms are neglected. Bodybuilding training programs focus on every muscle in the body to ensure none go untrained and become problem areas.
Balance
A well-balanced bodybuilding-training program results in a well-balanced physique. Bodybuilders are able to eliminate the awkwardness of many common functions by adding additional strength (through training) to areas, which may lack functional strength.

Endurance
All sports involve repetition of strenuous tasks, whether it is running, jumping, throwing, or catching. As muscles repeat the same actions dozens or hundreds or even thousands of time, fatigue begins to se in. The muscle groups are flooded with blood for hours at a time, and lactic acid begins to build up in these areas.
If you're an athlete, do a little bit of reading on standard bodybuilding routines. Even if you cannot add a full bodybuilding routine to your sports training protocol, see what areas of your physique you've been neglecting. You might just find that a few movements each week will go a long way in increasing your sports ability and avoiding injury.

Hot and savory soup on a cool night can make any meal a hit. Soups are enjoyed universally and internationally. Almost every culture and country has their soup specialties or signature soups. Of course, Amera has it's own regional favorites like New England Clam Chowder and New Orleans gumbo. Check out them demonstration video below for Healthy Recipes - Homemade Chicken Soup.

Soups come in two main varieties, clear soups and thick soups. Many of the bases for soups are credited to the French. But soup is as old as humankind and the French merely refined and perfected soup. The French names for clear soups are bouillon and consommé. Although the simplest form of soup, these two basics can be used to create spectacular culinary delights.

Easy and healthy soup recipes, part one

Soups are a classic comfort food. Warming to body and soul, most are also low in calories. While many cream based soups are high in fat and calories, they are appropriate for most low carbohydrate diets. On the other hand, many low fat and low calorie commercially prepared soups are very high in carbohydrates. An example is any soup containing pasta, potatoes or rice. See video demonstration below for an easy tomato soup recipe.

Pennsylvania researchers say the pounds melt off quickly on low-carbohydrate diets because overeating is fueled by simple carbohydrates like white bread, white rice and potatoes, white pasta, processed foods, sugary foods and desserts. It follows that you'll want to avoid these foods when they're present in soups. Soups containing beans are also high in carbohydrates.

While vegetables and fruits are carbohydrates, they are complex carbohydrates and digest more slowly than simple carbohydrates. Eating adequate amounts of vegetables and fruits is directly connected to improved health, weight loss, weight maintenance and balanced blood sugar levels. Limit fruits high in sugar to avoid blood sugar spikes.

I love my job! But we're having a dysfunctional relationship at the moment

Okay, I'm a patient person. NOT. I love my job at a major online website and I would never leave willingly. The writing and publishing opportunity they offer me is worth any aggravation.

My impatience stems from this email statement: "we’ve made several observations about the migration of content..." Yeah, like in stuff has disappeared into thin air. Stuff I didn't always back up or lost to a willfully suicidal hard drive.

I hope I've learned my lesson. ALWAYS back up everything! Then back up the back ups. And never rely on a laptop.

Trio of easy and delicious hummus recipes

Hummus is a savory Mediterrean dish that goes with many foods. Whether you use it as a dip, slather it on toast, or top your favorite lamb dish with it, hummus is versatile. Hummus has been referred to as one of the oldest known prepared foods. Eaten in the Middle East since ancient times, hummus is still a staple of the region.

Hummus has gained popularity in Europe and the US, partly due to immigrants introducing it to American cities. The vegetarian movement also helped to boost the dish's consumption. Relatively low in carbohydrates at 3 grams per one tablespoon, it also only has 27 calories, 1 gram of fat and 1 gram of protein. A serving size is usually two tablespoons as hummus is often treated as a condiment. But this dish is healthy enough to be consumed in larger amounts within reason. Also check out the cooking demonstration video below for another hummus recipe.

Easy and elegant Brussels sprouts recipes

Brussels sprouts are not known as everyone’s favorite vegetable. This is because most people do not prepare Brussels sprouts properly, often under seasoning and over cooking them. The recipes below can start you down the road to being a Brussels sprouts lover.

First grown in 16th century Belgium, Brussels sprouts are cousins of the cabbage, another misunderstood vegetable. Both blend well with stronger ingredients like, garlic, onions, cheeses and spices. When choosing Brussels sprouts look for small bright green spouts with compact leaves.
