Confessions of a Carb Queen Part Two

I’m not going to give you, dear reader, excerpts from this incredible book, "Confessions of a Carb Queen - The lies we tell others, the lies we tell ourselves," by Susan Blech and Caroline Bock, mostly because I don’t want to ruin the experience for you if you decide to read the book.

And at a more than reasonable cost of $10.85 at Amazon, if you’re at all interested in the emotional and psychological reasons why someone can become morbidly obese (468 pounds) while thinking she’s “just a little chubby” this book is a must. Denial was a large theme throughout this book.

Although a very personal memoir with a vivid inside view to one woman’s experience, this book will certainly ring true for a majority of people who struggle with obesity, binge eating, and dealing with emotions by burying them with food, and denial. Denial and miscalculated portions and calories among dieters and non-dieters alike is epidemic. Dietetic studies done with doubly labeled water, which measures exact caloric intake and burn, show nearly all subjects underestimate their caloric intake by as much as 50 percent. (See Leigh Peele's demonstration video on how small miscalculations in portion size can cost you big).

One curious twist to this book is the title itself. Although Ms. Blech gained her weight binging on fast foods laden with carbohydrates, her foods of choice were also rife with fats, sugar, and just plain high in calories. And how does she lose over 250 pounds? Ironically she’s did it by spending 2 ½ years in Durham, NC on the high carbohydrate and very low protein Duke Rice Diet. She maintains her weight with staples like rice, pasta, vegetables, and fruit. So, technically she is still a carb queen, just a much smaller one.

I know most of my readers are low carbohydrate people. But I’d suggest you keep an open mind when it comes to successful weight loss maintained long term no matter what the program. One message Ms. Blech’s book conveys is the inescapable fact that the roots of over-eating and obesity are emotional. The key to sustained weight loss is less about what diet you use and more about dealing with the underlying causes why you got fat in the first place.

Early on in this book, you learn of Ms. Blech’s less than perfect childhood (like many of us have experienced). Her mother suffered a stroke in her early forties and has spent the rest of her life in nursing facilities and hospitals. Her father raised four children on his own and Susan felt how thin he was stretched. Living in “the house without a mother” was the defining difficulty that sent Ms. Blech on a lifetime of emotional turmoil, low self esteem, bingeing and weight gain.

This memoir is so detailed and descriptive that many passages make you cry, laugh, gasp, or reread them. Ms. Blech and her sister / co-author are gifted writers. Ultimately, Ms. Blech gains control of her bingeing and her emotions. She losses an incredible amount of weight and finds her “grown up” self. One defining moment in her struggle comes after 35, while she’s been at Duke a considerable time. When her father visits and fails to say “I’m proud of you” or do or act as she wants, she binges, gains 40 pounds in a week, cries, and eats more. Her doctor’s gentle advice to “be proud of yourself” resonates to her as “Grow Up.”

And she begins to see her childhood in a new perspective. She lets go of the hurt child she was and begins taking care of the adult she is becoming. Susan Blech is a woman of great courage and naked honesty. She should be considered a genuine heroine in the war on obesity.

If this book doesn’t surprise, shock, and inspire you, make you laugh and cry, and hold you spellbound, you need to take a cue from the Tin Man.

Leigh Peele of Fat Loss Trouble Shooter Has Made A Must See Video

Leigh Peele runs Fat Loss Trouble Shooter and she really is an expert on fat loss. I get her newsletter but also received one today from Tom Venuto, fat loss coach from Burn The Fat.com about Leigh's video on why many people can't lose fat.

Bottom line, our bottoms (and bellies) are fat because we have a case of portion distortion. And we're not talking Big Mac versus a regular hamburger. We're talking small errors in measuring that add up to big calorie errors.

Believe me this will open your eyes to the value of accurate portions, careful measuring, weighing instead of eyeballing portions, and saving as much as 150 calories or more in one CLEAN meal. If you eat six small meals a day that could mean 900 calories more than you thought you were eating.

Do you really know how many calories you're really eating? Check out this video at Tom's blog. While you're there subscribe to his newsletter and buy his book. You'll be glad you did.

Here's what Tom said about Lee's video:

"In my last blog post about a recent low carb study, I wrote:

“One of the most firmly established facts in dietetics research is that almost everyone underreports their food intake BADLY, sometimes by as much as 50%. I’m not saying everyone “lies,” they just forget or don’t know. In fact, this underreporting of calorie intake is such a huge problem that it makes obesity research very difficult to do and conclusions difficult to draw from free-living studies.”

Well, hardly anyone believes that either. When they can’t lose weight, they blame it on something else: it’s not under-estimating portions, it’s genetics, thyroid or some kind of hormonal anomaly.

“Help Tom! I’m eating 900 calories a day and I still can’t lose weight!”

Yeah right.

And that brings me to this video you’re about to watch and why I like it so much.

It’s hard enough to explain this verbally with logic when you’re up against so much resistance and denial. But what if you could see with your own eyes an example of just ONE OF MANY ways that you may be eating far more than you realize?

Like I said before, NOTHING beats a good demonstration.

So, watch this demonstration, and appreciate a much needed wake up call about calories.

Credit and a big thank you go to the producer of this video, LEIGH PEELE…
THE FAT LOSS TROUBLESHOOTER!, we love you!… well, us nutrition educators love you… some other people may hate you after watching this (but even THEY will love you too after they get lean and mean by following this advice.)"

At risk of receiving low carb hate mail, (AND BOY DID I!) I had to post this. It's NOT anti-low carb, it merely

looks upon the latest low fat versus low carb study without a jaded and preconceived viewpoint.

I've said this before, I tend to listen to and follow the advice and lifestyles of "experts" who look fit. Not other

dieters - mostly the non-resistance training folks - don't reach goal or they look unfit.

Tom Venuto rocks (he's also rock hard) and he makes some valid points in his latest post
href="http://www.burnthefat.com">at Burn The Fat. And if you're serious about being fit subscribe to his free

newsletter and buy his books. I highly recommend them.

* What the new "low carb study REALLY says"

A news media feeding frenzy erupted earlier this week when a new dietstudy
broke in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) on Thursday, July 17th.

Almost all the reporters got it wrong, wrong WRONG! So did most of the gloating
low carb forumites and bloggers. Come to think of, almost everyone interpreted
this study wrong.

Some valuable insights came out of this study, but almost everyone missed them
because they were too busy believing what the news said or defending their own
cherished belief systems ...

See what this study REALLY said on the Burn The Fat Blog:

Unknown Facts About The Flu # Three, Four and Five, New Tony Horton 10 Minute Workouts & Cool Links

Number Three - Having this flu is like going seven rounds with a sneaky Ninja fighter. Just when you think you've got the upper hand and he's going down for the count he sucker punches you and your flat on your back.

Number Four - Being forced to go on a nearly all liquid diet sucks. I found myself lying in bed the other day wondering "How many days of fasting before you begin to lose muscle mass?"

Number Five - Your endurance goes on a vacation. My normal before breakfast routine between 6:30 am and 8 am is get up is make the bed, let the puppy out, feed the fish, turn on the televisions - yes two, start coffee, do my bathroom ablutions and get dressed, lay out Bruno's clothes, wake up Bruno, make his breakfast then have a cup of coffee, start a load of laundry, call Jerry (that's the easy one), shoo Bruno off to the bus, do dishes, feed the horse, feed the dogs and cats, then make my breakfast. Finally, I sit down and eat while watching news on one television and Food TV with the sound off on the other.

Since I got the flu I have to interject rest breaks between every one or two chores.
Like make the bed, let the puppy out, lay down on the couch a few minutes. And then lay down in bed after a breakfast of toast if I'm lucky and water with lime if I feel I can't eat anything. My endurance is lagging so far below normal it's scary. I'm on damned day eight of this flu and I'm so ready to be done with it. Although I'm managing to keep up with the chores that are of bare bones necessity the house is slowly sinking into disarray including dirt tracked in from the muddy yard by people and pets.

Oh well, Spring Cleaning will commence as soon as I'm able.

And on the "Great News" front, Tony Horton just released a new line of fitness videos called 'Tony Horton's 10 Minute Trainer: Give Me 10 Minutes and I'll Give You Results!' Yes, I'm ordering mine today. I have his Power Half Hour line of workouts and they are killer. I'm sure 10 minutes with Tony is worth an hour with any other trainer. Why not try one of them yourself? If you can't find 30 minutes or 10 minutes a day to exercise I want to hear that excuse...

Here's a few cool links I want to share:

From Tom Venuto's Burn The Fat Blog:

Fat Burners - The Unadulterated Truth

The short and sweet answer is NO, you do not ever “need” fat burners.

While I won’t dismiss the possibility that there are some ingredients in some “fat burner” products that might help a little bit, I take great displeasure in seeing those kinds of misleading headlines as well as the misleading use of models who are often paid to endorse the product even though they may never have even used it (they’re just models!)

Many “fat burner” companies have been sued by the Federal Trade Commission for false advertising, false claims and falsifying before and after photos.
The best you get is a slight thermogenic effect and possibly some slight appetite suppression. A few products might work through other mechanisms like improving thyroid, but if you forgive me the generalization, I consider the effects of all these products to be minutia. In a previous newsletter, I wrote that in my opinion, 97% of your results come from nutrition and training and maybe you get an extra 3% advantage from supplements. Read more.
